How the Series Works
Each journal in the Covenant Group Discipleship Series focuses on one of three major facets of a growing disciple: knowing Christ deeply, reflecting Christ authentically, and sharing Christ intentionally. The series builds upon a life-skill foundation of an appointment with God (AWG) and additional skill training aimed at preparing men for greater depth of scripture reflection, sharing Christ with others, and spiritual mentoring (disciples who become disciplemakers).
Each journal has “stand-alone” benefits but is best used as part of a three-part set. There are two (2) training sets (the Adventure Series followed by the Challenge Series) that comprise the Covenant Group Discipleship Series. The materials have a recommended order of use to maximize the training benefits. Each journal takes about 12 weeks to complete. We have found the two-year approach to be effective, using a trimester framework that allows for a summer break (or an alternative summer focus.) If launched in the fall, three (3) units can be completed before the summer break. Men choosing to continue through the summer will take a four-semester approach. Two journals—His Glory and His Nature—may be used either as an “introductory” journal prior to commencing the Adventure Series or used to supplement the Adventure Series or Challenge Series in a four-semester approach.
When the Covenant Group Discipleship Series is used within a ministry context as a core pathway for discipleship, leadership should present the full two-year vision. This way, participants can see the big picture. When extenuating circumstances occur and men discontinue for a while, knowing the two-year pathway allows them (and leaders) to know where they left off and where to resume later.
