The Journals

Get the most out of your Covenant Group experience

Covenant Group Discipleship Journals are organized into a three-part Adventure Series, followed by a three-part Challenge Series. Progressing sequentially through Journals 1 through 6 maximizes the training benefits. Each journal typically takes about 12 weeks to complete.

We have found a trimester framework to be effective, as it allows for a summer break. If the Adventure Series begins in early fall, all three units can be completed before the summer break. If it begins in January, three units can be completed by year-end, with a summer break in between. The same schedule works well for the Challenge Series.

There are two companion journals that may be used to supplement either series within a four-semester framework. His Glory can serve as an introductory journal prior to beginning the Adventure Series (see journal description).

Each journal is built around three central pursuits of a disciple:

Knowing Christ Deeply

Reflecting Christ Authentically

Sharing Christ Intentionally

The Adventure Series

The Adventure Series is the first three-journal training set in the Covenant Group Discipleship series. Each journal has a twofold purpose: first, Assigned Scripture passages for daily reading and reflection—the foundational Appointment With God (AWG) life skill, and second, Spiritual practices that build progressively from one journal to the next, including meditation exercises, Scripture memorization, learning to share the Gospel, and other core disciplines.    Journal 1 — His Works focuses on five key truths about God’s work on our behalf and five corresponding truths about our identity in Christ.     Journal 2 — His Image centers on the character of Christ and how we can reflect Him authentically in everyday life. Journal 3 — His Heart emphasizes spiritual reproduction, equipping men to lead others to faith in Christ.

The Challenge Series

The Challenge Series is the sequel three-journal training set designed specifically for men.  Journal 4 — His Ways examines ten specific “ways” of God revealed in Scripture, helping men better understand who God is and how to respond to Him in everyday life.   Journal 5 — His Calling explores Christ’s invitation to follow Him as a fully devoted disciple, calling men to a life of obedience, surrender, and purpose.  Journal 6 — His Commission focuses on the heart of Jesus’ mission to make disciples and equips men with basic, practical skills to walk alongside others in their spiritual growth.

2 Companion Journals

Two companion journals, His Glory and His Nature, may be used to supplement either the Adventure Series or the Challenge Series in a four-semester approach.  His Glory investigates ten attributes of God revealed in Scripture. His Nature explores what it means to be conformed to the likeness of Jesus.  We recommend completing His Nature after His Glory or Journal 1 — His Works.
